New Bern NJROTC Regatta Notice of Race

.

4th Annual New Bern Navy Junior ROTC Regatta
Saturday, 4 May 2013
Notice of Race
Description – This will be a collegiate-style event, hosted by the New Bern High School NJROTC. The organizing authority is the Fairfield Harbour Yacht Club. It will be held at Bridgeton Harbor Marina (link to map) and competitors will sail a round-robin in the NJROTC’s fleet of Flying Junior sloops. This regatta is a one-day fundraising event for the NJROTC which is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization; the entry fee is tax-deductible and additional contributions are welcome.

The Flying Junior (FJ) is a 13’ 3” centerboard sloop sailed in this event without spinnaker or trapeze. The boats will be provided by the host, New Bern NJROTC. Each competing team of skipper & crew will sail a race in an assigned boat, then rotate to the next boat in succession. Depending on the number of competitors, rotation thru the fleet of FJs may be 1 or 2 races, then a layover, then 1 or 2 races, etc. The "round-robin" is completed when every competitor has raced in every boat. This assures that differences in the boats or equipment is eliminated as a factor, the next step beyond one-design racing!

All sailors in the area are invited to either participate, or sponsor another sailor to compete.

Rules- This regatta will be governed by the 2013-2016 Racing Rules of Sailing, and the Sailing Instructions. Scoring will be as per Appendix A of the 2013-2016 RRS. Although it is intended to sail a complete round-robin (ie every competing skipper/crew sails at least one race in each boat), the regatta may be complete when every competitor has sailed in at least one race.

Skippers’ Meeting- will be held at 0930 at Bridgeton Harbor Marina. Sailing Instructions will be available at the Skippers’ Meeting, with any changes to the S.I.s and the rotation schedule. Notices & scores will be posted in the foyer of the Bridgeton Harbor Marina dockmaster’s office.

Schedule- the first start will be scheduled for 1030, with races to be completed as quickly as practical thereafter. There will be a social and awards after the races at 1500 hrs or as soon as practical thereafter at the Bridgeton Harbor Marina. Competitors, spouses, sponsors, and contributing guests are invited.

Getting Ready For the 2010 Sailing Season

This year we have some new boats! Head Coach Jerry Rezab nogotiated the donation of 3 more Vanguard Flying Juniors, and we were also given a Thistle.
.

Our active fleet is now 7 Flying Juniors. Here is a picture of the "new" FJs shortly after their arrival, on the triple-stack trailer. These boats were equipped with travelers, halyard tensioners, mast rams adjustable everything with split controls... the coaches have put in a lot of work re-rigging them to match the simpler Club FJs, so that returning New Bern NJROTC sailors can enjoying the expanded fleet!

It's a long way from where we picked up these three Flying Juniors to New Bern, NC; and it has seemed like an even longer journey from the trailer at the school to have them ready to sail. These are "one-design" boats meaning that the hull shape and the sail plan are all identical, and since they were built in the same factory within a year of each other, you'd think they were pretty close to identical in many respects... not so! This is certainly not to be taken as looking a gift horse in the mouth, but there is no way to tally the work and the ingenuity that went into getting these boats commissioned. The volunteer coaches have done an excellent job, and we hope that the donors will be proud of their boats' new careers!

..
Here is our red Thistle, built in 1964 and donated to our program in December 2009. It has the best sails of any of our boats, thanks to the generosity of Thistle class members, but this boat is currently in a state of major disassembly. We hope to have it sailing by the summer.

The swim test (mandatory for joining the Sailing Squadron) is scheduled for Feb 22

Sailing sessions will begin on March 1st, weather permitting, and will continue every Monday after school until May 10. Obviously, the sailing sessions will be dependent on weather.

We are planning an invitational regatta on May 15.
Further details on this regatta, and a formal NOR (Notice of Race document) will posted here when complete.
